HELLO ALL!!

Hey I just went throught the Bethany Junior College magazine - "INK SPOTS", and it is really impressive!!!....Just brought back a lot of memories, guess it left me feeling a wee bit nostalgic!!!...
As Arun requested, another incident that made me miss school more was the Sports Day.Inspite of my tests I was bent on going to attend the sports.Only God knows the number of times I changed my mind about going.Another issue was wanting to run because I really missed it!!!!...But we did not have a 4 member team and there was absolute chaos about who was going to run and who wasn't.
Well anyway, I ultimately did go and our team comprising of 3 guys and 1 girl - Nandan,Naveen,Tanmay and me, who had absolutely no practice was running with 4 other teams which had really fast senior runners.We were all nerves just before the race and had no expectations whatsoever.
But things changed so fast as soon as the gun went off and Nandan took off to give us a lead which I managed to keep.Naveen with his long(ostrich-like??!!!) strides comfortably stayed in the first place and Tanmay gave us a magnificient lead over the others and finished the race in style, proving to the others that we were not to be underestimated!!...It was such an amazing feeling, very unbelievable and awesome!!!....
Watching the rest of the sports and everyone cheering our school on, made me really miss that school spirit and the fun that we had!!!....Its not the same in college, not at all. Well atleast I got to make the best of my 2 years in Bethany with no regrets,with the best friends and classmates I could possibly have!!!.......

"Terrible Tuesday"

26th morning looked like everyother Mumbai rainy day - grey clouds, no Sun and variations between drizzles and hard rain. Actually classes for my batch at college were suspended for a week becuase the other batches had their final exams/unit tests. But I planned to go to college and use the library and also I had a jam session planned with two of my classmates - Andrew and Eric.
I left home at around 11 am. The clouds threw down a drizzle. I usually walk to college becuase its just 15 minutes away. As I neared the college I got a call from Eric saying that he dint know if he could come with his guitar becuase the rains were heavy where he was living. He lives in Vasai which is around 50 kms from where I'm staying and my college is - Andheri West. But he said he'll try and make it and we can atleast jam with my acoustic guitar. I reached the college - a bit drenched. I went into the library and got on to the computer and was doing some reading. Another class mate of mine - Ashok came over to the library too. So I was reading and having a chat with him. We noticed that the rains were now harder. Another classmate of mine - Inder turned up. So we were reading and chatting. There was no sign of Andrew and I personally felt and still feel he over slept!
Eric dropped in at around 1:30 totally drenched. He tried his best to dry him self off the AC!! So we just got together playing some music. I dug out the falling apart drumkit which we had found lying uselessly in the library. We worked on a new tune created by Eric. While we were playing another of our classmate - Sandeep turned up. By around 3 we finished lunch and continued to sit in the library. Thats when the power went out. We looked out of the window and saw that the rains were the hardest we had ever seen. The road outside was starting to flood. People and cars were moving in ankle deep water. We decided to wait in the library till the rain reduced.
At 5 things were getting worse. But we continued to stay in the library which is on the 2nd floor. At around 5:45 the people in our college asked us to leave becuase the water was starting to enter the ground floor (where the commercial studio is). So we started to prepare ourselves to leave. I asked Eric and Inder to come over to my place becuase there was no way they would have been able to get transport home. Ashok planned to wait a bit longer.
We prepared oursleves for knee deep water - which it was when we stepped out of the college. But when we came out to the road the water was upto to our waist level. Armed with our unmbrellas and holding dearly to our bags we started to wade through the water and the rain. As we started to move it started getting even more worse. The water wasnt stagnent - it was moving and with a high force - almost with the force of a river. At some parts we couldnt move forward because our shoes were soaked and they had no grip on the road below.
When we reached one of the main roads we were totally alarmed. People had left their cars which were slowly filling up with water. We even saw a car with its music system still on. We made it a point to stay towards the middle of the road becuase we dint want to end up getting sucked in by one of the drains.
As we moved forward people were returning back saying that the water was neck level up ahead and the water force too much. We dint know what to do becuase we had to move forward and going back to the college would be worse becuase definately our college road was totally submerged. So we decided to follow most of the people who were taking an alternative route. As we went through this alternative road we realised that we were getting to higher ground but the water currents were getting worse. The road ending up being a mud road so it even more difficult to move - the water level in all these areas was chest high. We finally reached an area which was so high that the water hadnt flooded it. Our spirits rose - becuase after almost an hour of bring half submerged in water we saw flat ground. We tied our shoe laces and started moving forward again.
We had to go down hill again to reach the main road where I was staying. We entered chest level water again. It was here where it was total hell and chaos. The rains were so hard that umbrerllas were no use. We had no choice but to move forward. We came to a part where a large channel of water was joining the road we were on. The force was so high that if we moved a foot forward we would have been swept away by the currents and banged against some house or something. But luckily the local people there had tied ropes to subhmerged trees and metal poles. With the aid of these ropes we crossed through the water. A girl behind me lost grip of the rope and was almost drawn away by the current but Eric caught her at the right time. We finally crossed that area - totally tired. We moved on a bit and we came to another such place - where water was joining in from higher area. Here there were no ropes or anything as such and the force was so high not even a bus could have successfully survived it. But we had to cross it to go forward. So to cross it people on the other side were holding out bamboo poles. To cross over we had to hold the other side of the pole. So the current automatically pushed us around to the other side becuase the pole went around in an arc since it was being held on one side. We successfully (and thank God we did!) crossed that area. But that wasnt the worst.
Now we were in an area where all buildings with ground floors were half submerged or totally submerged. There were two wheelers and trees floating around, the path was blocked by overturned autos and buses. To cross the "path" infront of us would have been suicidal. We relaised that we had to get to higher ground or there was no chance of surviving becuase we were losing daylight and the whole of Mumbai was without electricity. Again with the help of ropes and chains we crossed over to an apartment/shop complex. Here I lost my footing and I was only gripping the tope with one arm. But luckily Inder helped me find my footing again. The water force was so much that it almost took us half a minute to take a step forward - we were going against the current. We reached the apartment complex and looked and asked around for the stairs. It was dark and the water level was so high we couldnt make out the stairs. Finally we found it and started climbing with a bit of relief - totally drenched. We kept climbing till we reached the fifth floor.
We stopped at the landing and took off our T-shirts and drained out all the water from it. The people in one of the apartments gave us towels to dry ourselves. We put our bags down against the wall and took out our mobile phones and tried reaching our respective homes. It was 9 pm. We just sat there - at the stair landing and we saw more people joining us. But the peple living in the apartments were very kind and they saw to that all the women got a safe shelter in their apartments.
The people in one of the aprtments (who handed us towels) later on called us in and gave us Kichdi and pickle (which they had cooked for everyone who were stuck like us). We happily ate. Phone lines and mobile phone networks were down. We just sat there and talked. Most of the other people fell asleep. We also heard other stories of people and how they were helped to survive. The rain was still coming down as hard as it was through the evening. We asked the people there and we realised that we were just ten minutes away from my place but it was too dangerous to go outside.
By around 3 am the rain reduced and we noticed that the level of the water on the roads had reduced. We took the chance and left the apartment (thanking all those people that helped us). Armed with the lights from out mobile phone we made our way down the stairs (a lot of people were asleep on the stairs and in other apartments in the building). We left the apartment with the water at our knees (pun intended!). We found it a bit difficult to get to the road becuase there were vehicles floating around. We reached the once familiar main road and the water was till our chests. We started to shiver becuase it was extremely cold outside and we were in wet clothes. We slowly started to make our way through the dark waters. The road was a total mess...vehicles were just left there, people were spending their nights in buses and others like us were walking. It was still raining. And then I saw it - the sillouette of my apartment building, nothing had ever looked better!! We made our way to the front of my apartment and started to climb the stairs. We reached the front of my door...and I opened it - we were home atlast.
We took turns taking a bath. I made some coffee and we ate some 'namkeen' that was lying in the fridge. I put out the matresses and bedsheets and we settled down to sleep. As our heads hit the matresses Eric said something that was resonating in mine and Inder's head too - 'After all we've seen we need to seriously thank God for being lucky to make it home'. So finally after many hours we slept.
I woke up at 8:30 and started to clear the room. I went down to the road (we were on the 4th floor) and saw that the waters had receded a bit but the road was a complete mess........vehicles, footwear, clothes, debris, a dead buffallow and still ankle deep water and the rains hadnt stopped yet.
Now its the 28th...3pm. Eric left this morning, Inder left last evening. The power came back last morning. I dont have a gas cylinder anymore so cooking is out of the question and restaurants are flooded too.. But cable came back last evening and the news chanells show little of what is actually going on, its much much worse. Some parts are still flooded, but life here is slowly inching back to what it was. But everyone is hoping that it doesnt rain again.. I guess college will be closed closed for a few days becuase the ground floor studio was flooded. But here the three of us are extremely grateful to those people who helped through and especially to that wonderful family that took us in and actually took the trouble of cooking for us. Not a single emergency service was in sight, but the people helping on the streets and their spirits - that the rain could never wash away. A big thank you to them all....

I ve been thinking about posting something on the blog for a long time now.But, there is nothing really to speak of.
Well,I guess all of you are just as bored as I am . So here are some Sardar jokes to cheer you up.



1- Sardar ji is buying a TV
"Do you have color TVs?"
"Sure."
"Give me a green one, please."

2- Sardar Ji calls Air India.
"How long does it take to fly to Amritsar?"
"Just a sec," says the rep.
Thank you." says the Sardar ji and hangs up.

3- Sardar ji is filling up a job application
He promptly fills in the lines on NAME, AGE, ADDRESS, etc.
Then came the column SALARY EXPECTED
After much thought he writes: Yes

4- Sardarji goes into a store and sees a shiny object.
He asks the clerk, "What is that shiny object?"
The clerk replies, "That is a Thermos flask."
The Sardar asks, "What does it do?"
The clerk responds, "Keeps hot things hot and cold things cold."
The Sardar says, "I'll take it!"
The next day, he walks into work with his new Thermos.
His Sardar boss sees him and asks, "What is that shiny object with you?"
He said, "It's a Thermos flask."
The boss asks, "What does it do?"
He replies, "Keeps hot things hot and cold things cold."
The boss said, "Wow, what do you have in it?"
The Sardar replies, "Two cups of coffee and a coke."

5- Sardarji fixed an answering machine at home.
Two days later he disconnected it because he was getting complaints
like "Saala phone utha ke bolta hai ghar pe nahin hai."

6- What does Sardarji do after taking photocopies?
He compares it with the original for spelling mistakes.

7- What does Sardarji do when he has one white sheet and wants an extra
sheet?
He makes a photocopy of the white sheet.

8- There was a meeting of all the Surd freedom fighters.
They were planning for a free Punjab. Santa Singh raised a point,
"Oh...we'll take Punjab from India but how would we develop it?"
That was a tough one indeed. Banta Singh had a brainwave...
"No problem! We'll attack Amrika, it would take over us and then
we would become a State of USA and develop automatically."
All the surds became happy with this very simple solution but an old surd
was not. Someone asked him why he wasn't happy.
The old surd replied, "THAT'S ALL VERY WELL...WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF BY CHANCE
WE TOOK OVER AMRIKA???"

9- Sardarji went to the appliance store sale and found a bargain.
"I would like to buy this small TV," he told the salesman.
"Sorry, we don't sell to Sardars," he replied.
He hurried home removed his turban and changed his hair style, and returned
to tell the salesman
"I would like to buy this TV."
"Sorry, we don't sell to Sardars," Salesman replied.
"Damn, he recognised me," he thought.
He went for a complete disguise this time, haircut, new hair colour,
new outfit, big sunglasses, waited a few days, saw the salesman again.
"I would like to buy this TV."
"Sorry, we don't sell to Sardars," he replied.
Frustrated, he exclaimed, "How do you know I'm a Sardar?"
"Because that's a microwave," he replied.

10- Why did 18 Sardars go to a movie?
Because below 18 was not allowed.

11- How do you measure Sardarji's intelligence?
Stick a tire pressure gauge in his ear

12- Sardarji proposes to a woman. She says yes if you bring me a pair of crocodile boots. He sets off to Africa and disappears. Finally a search is being made, they find him hunting crocodiles and watch him killing a huge one. He walks over the reptile, checks its legs and angrily exclaims "71st and *again* barefoot!"

13- What do you do when a Sardar throws a hand grenade at you?
Pull the pin and throw it back.

14- What do you do when a Sardar throws a pin at you?
Run like crazy....he's got a hand grenade in his mouth.

15- How do you make a Sardar laugh on Saturday?
Tell him a joke on Wednesday.

16- What is the Sardar doing when he holds his hands tightly over his ears?
Trying to hold on to a thought.

17- Why do Sardars work seven days a week?
So you don't have to re-train them on Monday.

18- Why can't Sardars make ice cubes?
They always forget the recipe.

19- How did the Sardar try to kill the bird?
He threw it off a cliff.

20- What do you call 10 Sardars standing ear to ear?
A wind tunnel.
